Speaking Space is a day service for adults with a learning disability or autism that focuses on developing independence through using a total communication approach. This means that we will use signing, symbols, photographs and speech to support all aspects of the day service. Our aim is to help you become more independent within your community.
We are a small day service with a maximum number of 18 people per day. Our staffing ratios are 1 staff to approximately 3 clients. We are set in a beautiful semi-rural location with excellent links to the local facilities and services in Totton.
Most people will choose to come to Speaking Space for 1, 2 or 3 days a week and will stay for at least a year. The skills you learn at Speaking Space will also compliment other services you may be accessing during the rest of your week, such as College, by helping you develop your social skills.
When you start at Speaking Space, we will talk to you about your needs and will agree some targets for you to work on. You will then work on these targets within small groups throughout the year.We offer a range of activities within Speaking Space. This includes art, drama, music, numeracy, ICT and money skills. In addition, we also offer groups and activities that focus on developing social aspects of communication to help you improve your independence. These include:
