School Speech Therapy

Alex is enthusiastic and passionate about what she does, and we are getting good value for money

B Hawker – Headteacher, Oak Lodge School

Alex Kelly Ltd can provide a local Speech and Language Therapy service for schools in the Hampshire/Wiltshire/Dorset area. We believe in providing a tailored Speech and Language Therapy service to meet your schools specific needs. We are passionate about improving children’s communication and social skills and in providing high quality training for your staff.

Alex Kelly Ltd currently provides regular Speech & Language Therapy into 9 special schools and 21 mainstream schools across Hampshire and Dorset. Each school has a Speech Therapy service that is agreed jointly with the head teacher or equivalent and we aim to always provide you with a reliable, high quality service that is tailored to your needs.

We set termly objectives and provide you with a report at the end of each term summarising our progress. At the end of the academic year we provide you with a full report with evidence on any measurable outcomes.  The cost of the service is agreed prior to us starting, and includes all on-costs such as supervision, travelling and training.  Schools only pay for what they receive, so the cost is reduced if there has been any loss of SLT days due to absence.  This is calculated and invoiced on a monthly basis.

As a company we pride ourselves on consistently receiving excellent feedback for our service into schools and we are happy to provide you with references.

Please see the following examples of how other schools are using this service.

School A is a secondary special school near Portsmouth. They currently receive 2 days a week of speech therapy from Alex Kelly Ltd and have done so  since 2010. The speech therapist (SLT) spends most of her time assessing children with speech and language difficulties and setting programmes for them to follow in school.  The school has allocated time to a couple of TAs who then deliver these with supervision from our SLT. In addition to this, the school have put social skills on to the curriculum for all year 7s and 8s and this is run by school staff with support from our SLT. We have also provided an inset training day for all staff on developing social skills.

The cost for this is £221 per day.

School B is a mainstream infant school in the north of the county. They have joined with 9 other local primary schools to receive 1 day a week of speech therapy which is shared across the 10 schools. School B has asked to receive 4 half day visits per term (6 days per year) and the speech therapist spends her time assessing children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and then setting programmes for them to follow in school.  They have also sent staff on Alex’s social skills training course and have started a number of Talkabout groups.

The cost for each half day visit is £117.

School C is a secondary school for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. They currently receive 1 day a week of a senior speech therapist from Alex Kelly Ltd. In the past 3 years we have trained 2 TAs to deliver social skills groups, we have helped them to successfully put social skills onto the curriculum and we have delivered speech therapy programmes to a number of the boys at the school. A recent Ofsted report specifically mentions the good work that the school are doing around developing self-esteem and social skills through the use of the Talkabout programme.

The cost for this is £234 per day.

Social Skills Training & Consultancy

The importance of being socially skilled cannot be overestimated. We all need these skills to communicate effectively in order to listen to others, to express ourselves, to be taken seriously and to make friends. We know that social competence contributes to quality of life and has been repeatedly demonstrated to be a critical variable in predicting success in future life. However, not all children develop social competence naturally. Some children are socially unskilled and require intervention. So what can be done to help them develop social skills?

Alex Kelly is a speech and language therapist with 29 years’ experience of working with people with social skills difficulties. She is the author of the bestselling TALKABOUT resources and provides social skills training and consultancy work around the UK and abroad. She is currently writing a text book on developing social skills and is also researching the effectiveness of social skills interventions across a number of schools.

Alex usually trains alongside Amy Green, who has been working with Alex for over 4 years now and who specialises in social skills.

Alex and Amy offer practical training workshops for many kinds of audiences and will tailor the course to suit your needs. Alex will quote you individually for the work but to give you an idea of cost, she will typically charge from £600 – £900 per day.
